PDF Guide
How PDF-to-Word conversion really works, what makes a file enormous, what compression does and does not lose, how PDF passwords actually protect a document, and what PDF/A is for.
- How to convert a PDF to WordWhat really happens when a PDF becomes a .docx: how text is rebuilt from glyph positions, why scanned pages give nothing, and how to judge the result.
- How to compress a PDF fileImages are almost always why a PDF is huge. What compression really changes, three presets with the numbers we measured, and when a file cannot shrink.
- How to add or remove a PDF passwordThe difference between a user password and an owner password, what PDF encryption really protects, and the honest limits of every tool that offers to unlock a file.
- Why scanned PDFs are so largeA scan is a stack of photographs, not a document. Where the megabytes come from, which scanner settings cause them, and how to fix a file you have already been sent.
- Merging and splitting PDF filesWhat combining and separating PDFs does to fonts, bookmarks, form fields and file size — and how to pick a method that does not quietly damage the file.
- What is PDF/A, and do you need it?PDF/A without the jargon: what it forbids, why fonts must be embedded, which conformance level to pick, and when it is the wrong format for your file.
- When a PDF is too large to emailAttachment limits are lower than the advertised numbers, thanks to encoding overhead and the recipient's server. The real ceilings and how to fit under them.
- Compressing a PDF without losing qualityWhat lossless really means for a PDF, where the quality actually goes when you compress, and how to choose settings that stay invisible on screen and in print.
Compress, convert and unlock PDFs in your own browser tab. PDF re-encodes the images that make a file huge, rebuilds a Word document from the text layer, and adds or removes passwords. A twelve-page scan we measured went from 17.69 MB to 1.49 MB. The file is processed in the tab — there is no upload.

These guides describe how the PDF format behaves in general. Our tool compresses PDFs, converts them to Word and adds or removes passwords; it does not merge, split, OCR or convert to PDF/A, and pages covering those subjects say so. Figures quoted for compression are measurements from real files, and your own results depend on what is inside your document.
